Tonja Christensen is the definition of a free spirit. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Tonja was raised as one of nine children, and as a result, she developed a rather far-reaching sense of personal freedom. “Nobody was paying much attention to what I did,” says Tonja. “I wanted to explore the world, learn about people and cultures.” At the age of eighteen, the lissome Miss Christensen did just that – she hooked up with a friend and took off for Europe, with plans to launch a modeling career in Spain. After a short stint in Amsterdam, she landed in Sitges, a resort town outside of Barcelona, and became the local bella Americana. “I had to learn Spanish from scratch,” she says. “I’m fluent now. I’ve also had to learn quite a bit of Catalan.” With an appearance on the cover of Playboy Spain, the blonde-haired nymph came to our attention – shortly thereafter, Miss Christensen became our Miss November 1991. “In Sitges, I have a view to kill for,” says Tonja of her beachfront home. “It’s normal to go topless on any beach here. I don’t, though – I guess I’m too American.” Luckily, Tonja bent the rules for Playboy magazine, appearing in both a ten-page spread and on the cover of our April ’93 issue, followed by commercials for Sanyo and a role on the TV series Dark Justice. When not modeling, Miss November treats herself rather well, indulging in sunsets on the beach, good massages and chocolate fondue. She loves Agatha Christie mysteries and her favorite movie is Dead Poets Society. The only thing missing is a man to share her success with – but whoever he is, he must be open to interpretation. “The most important thing in a relationship is honesty,” says Tonja. “Most of the time, it hurts – but it’s the only way to be with another person.” With a cherry on top like Tonja Christensen, who could tell a lie?
